“These know-it-alls claim there’s a “consensus” on climate change and what to do about it.

Mr. Morano,

There certainly is a fundamental consensus on the basics of what climate science can tell us about our planet and the impact of humanity’s centuries long burning of ever more stupendous amounts of fossil fuels which release CO2 and other greenhouse gases into our atmosphere and oceans.  

It’s not that complicated, we live on a geophysical planet which behaves according to understandable dynamics.  Determined people aren’t that stupid.  Given resources there’s not much they can’t figure out, as the past centuries of progress make plain.  

Air Force scientists of the post WWII years certainly received the resources to study our atmosphere and how energy moves through it.  It wasn’t just the US either.  Working independently were Australian and Russian Air Force scientists along with other lesser players.  All in the interest of developing better weapons and communication.  Succeed they certainly did and by the seventies the fundamentals were resolved (Independently even! It’s not like the USSR or USA was sharing information back then) and it remains solid. 

As proof of that solidity we have an assortment of modern marvels that are absolutely dependent on a superb level of understanding of the radiative properties of our atmosphere.  It’s paranoid and thoughtless to believe it’s still up for debate.  That can only be done by remaining rigidly ensconced within one’s own echo-chamber.

We know how much fossil fuels humanity has been burning!

We know the physics of greenhouse gases and infrared radiation!

We know that because of this fundamental unavoidable physics that greenhouse gases act as atmospheric insulation, slowing down the escape of heat to outer space.  Scientists observe and measure this phenomena.

Considering Poptech's defense of funding (#3 in comment series)

This is the third Poptech comment, actually two sent minutes apart, it hardly needs introduction except that I hope it will help enlighten some to the tactics and base attitudes of your Republican/libertarian contrarian type.

Yes and what kind of refutation is that post supposed to be?

1. Have you ever received direct funding from ExxonMobil?

2. Do funding sources have any influence over your scientific work?

     And you were expecting them to respond how?

3. Has your scientific position regarding climate change ever changed due to a funding source?

CC: Besides, we all know (the evidence is pretty clear cut and copious) this is sort of a class war thing.  With the crisp clean-cut right-wing military-industrial-complex types, pissed at the environmental types and long haired scientists with their increasingly strident messaging that humanity was exceeding its limits for a comfortable sustainable life style - and that we needed to think about what we were doing and perhaps trying to change some of our unsustainable habits.

With the Reagan White House at their backs, they created a PR machine that made "sustainability" - "environmentalism" - "stewardship towards our biosphere" - "slowing down our ravenous consumption" into bad words and demonized notions.

Will, if I'm ever going to get through your last comment I need to take it in segments, here's my first installment.  Your opening sentence raised my hackles because it's such a patently false description.  Therefore, in addition to my Reposts of the previous days, this session is going to be all about offering you a gallery of information that supports my claims regarding the base dishonesty at the root of the past decades worth of Climate Science Contrarianism.

Nonsense!  

On the one side we have a very tiny group of über-wealthy individuals with passionate political convictions - sure "great" business magnets, power politic players, PR tacticians, able to purchase what they want.  Thing is, they are people obsessed with achieving their own goals, they have no interests beyond self-interest, and they buy people who are willing to sell themselves. Money enabled the megaphone, self-interest drove the message.

So it was, "think tanks" sprouted like weeds and an alternate universe of thinking was fabricated to serve their lord's myopic-vision. All of it ringing of Machiavelli empire building struggles, not of learning about our planet.  

What happened to curiosity and wanting to understanding how our planet operates or how our society has and is changing it?   What happened to that eons old human drive to make the world a better place for our children's generations?

WillH my friend, self-interest über alles is all this other side you love knows.  I can point you to the evidence.  The truth is out there.  You just gotta poke around.

Chances are if you read something of prominence that bad-mouths the "establishment" scientific community and their ability to form a rational fact-driven consensus - I'll bet its been authored by one of these characters.

I want to pass along this email message from the writer Bill McKibben and his 350.org group because the malicious dirty-tricks and tactical lying about what scientists have been trying to teach us is nothing less than a criminal offense against US citizens and in fact global citizens and the future.  

I'm not talking some vague future down the road either.  If you objectively look at the tempo of extreme (and increasingly destructive) weather events throughout the world, you'll recognize we are now talking about our imminent future being irreparably damaged, thanks to decades worth of "Reaganomics" inspired and greed driven strategic dirty tricks focused on misleading our leaders and the public about the critically important facts regarding what society's sky-rocketing emissions are doing to the global climate that we depend on for everything we hold near and dear.

Dear Friends,

Earlier this morning, leaders from a wide variety of environmental and civil rights groups sent a short letter Attorney General Loretta Lynch, asking for a federal investigation of the allegations that Exxon knew that climate change was real decades ago and lied about it.

This is rare and powerful unity—I don’t remember a moment like it since the first days of the Keystone fight, when the same wide spectrum of leaders wrote a very similar letter.

But encouraging as it is to see this solidarity, the reason for it makes me bitter. Ever since I read the first exposés of Exxon’s mendacity in Inside Climate News and the Los Angeles Times, they’ve haunted me.

A corporation may never have done anything bigger and badder; just think how much would be different if Exxon had told the truth. We wouldn’t fully have solved global warming but we’d be well on the way—there would have been no 25 year phony pretend debate. There’d be a lot more solar panels, and a lot less carbon in the air. There'd be a lot more green jobs, and a lot fewer communities, most of them low income and communities of color, dealing with the terrible health impacts of pollution. None of you would have had to fight simply to get climate change taken seriously; instead we’d all be hard at work on solutions.¹

I think we should be angry. I don’t think we should be cynical and say ‘of course they knew.’ This behavior should shock us—it’s shocking. So can you please join us in asking the federal government to investigate Exxon?
