Senate Defeats Bill on Keystone XL Pipeline in Narrow Vote
By ASHLEY PARKER and CORAL DAVENPORTNOV. 18, 2014
Big Oil's Senators have forced a sudden vote on Keystone XL next Tuesday. Can you call Sens. Udall and Bennet and tell them to vote no on Keystone XL? |
Friends,
Sen. Mary Landrieu, the oil-soaked Senator from Louisiana who has taken millions from the fossil fuel industry, has called for a vote on Keystone XL to happen in the Senate next Tuesday.
Two of the people Big Oil needs to support the pipeline are Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet from Colorado.
After last week's election, the incoming climate-denying majority said they would make Keystone XL a top priority. If Big Oil wins Tuesday's vote, they could send Keystone XL to the President’s desk before the new Senate
takes office. That would be a slap in the face to President Obama's new climate goals, and an embarrassing concession to climate deniers.
Can you call Colorado l Sens. Udall and Bennet right away to tell them to stand with science, and against Keystone XL? Click here to get the number and make a call: act.350.org/call/kxl-senate- 2014-landrieu/
To find your Senator visit:
Yesterday a new poll was released showing the Keystone XL pipeline is more unpopular than ever.
By the end of the day, the most oil-soaked Democrat in the Senate was on the floor demanding a vote on Keystone XL.
That shows you how out of touch Big Oil's Senators have become. Anyone who stands for Keystone XL is casting their lot with the climate deniers, and not the American people. Can you tell Sens. Udall and Bennet to stand with us, and not Big Oil on today's vote?
I'll get you an update on the vote as soon as it happens,
Duncan

‘There are five major things that the oil sands companies need to do if they really truly do care about the environment and the amazing thing is that all five are achievable, not all that expensive, and all use already existing technology.’
1 Carbon capture and storage
2 Dry tailings instead of wet
3 Reducing the overall water usage of the plants
4 Clamping down on the level of acidifying emissions
5 Establishing large areas of boreal forest that are off limits

"Game Over for the Climate"
By JAMES HANSEN

GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening. That is why I was so troubled to read a recent interview with President Obama in Rolling Stone in which he said that Canada would exploit the oil in its vast tar sands reserves “regardless of what we do.”
If Canada proceeds, and we do nothing, it will be game over for the climate.
Canada’s tar sands, deposits of sand saturated with bitumen, contain twice the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by global oil use in our entire history. If we were to fully exploit this new oil source, and continue to burn our conventional oil, gas and coal supplies, concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere eventually would reach levels higher than in the Pliocene era, more than 2.5 million years ago, when sea level was at least 50 feet higher than it is now. That level of heat-trapping gases would assure that the disintegration of the ice sheets would accelerate out of control. Sea levels would rise and destroy coastal cities. Global temperatures would become intolerable. Twenty to 50 percent of the planet’s species would be driven to extinction. Civilization would be at risk. ….

What’s the Problem with the Tar Sands?
Canada’s tar sands is the biggest industrial project on earth, and the pace and scale of industry's continued plans for expansion is astonishing.
In northern Alberta, mostly foreign-owned oil companies are aggressively extracting bitumen from tar sands, which they turn into one of the dirtiest and most destructive forms of energy on the planet. In the process, they are creating serious social, economic and environmental problems in Alberta, North America and all over the world.industrial project on earth, and the pace and scale of industry's continued plans for expansion is astonishing.
Climate, air and water impacts
Tar sands development releases an inordinate amount of climate-warming greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This is the leading edge of a new era of carbon intensive "extreme energy". If we extract all known tar sands oil, the Earth's temperatures will rise substantially, leading to complete climate catastrophe. ...
Wildlife and human rights impacts
Tar sands development infringes on the constitutional rights of aboriginal peoples that have lived in the Northern Alberta region for millennia, destroying wildlife habitat, polluting air and water with toxins and carcinogens, and rendering traditional food sources – such as caribou and fish – extinct or inedible. ...
Threats to economy and democracy
Tar sands development has hurt Canada’s economic diversity and threatens its future prosperity. It has also turned one of the world’s most respected nations into a petro-state that muzzles scientists, guts environmental legislation at the behest of oil companies, clamps down on public participation, and bullies other nations attempting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Preventing the expansion of the tar sands, and eventually phasing this dirty source of energy out of use, is the only way to reduce our reliance on yesterday's fossil fuel economy and build a responsible and sustainable clean energy future for our children and grandchildren.
