LandscapesandCycles

Jim Steele’s LandscapesAndCycles Fraud

In a nutshell Jim Steele proposes that landscapes and natural cycles are more powerful drivers of global warming than the atmosphere that lies between Earth and frigid outer space.

His scientific underpinning is a self-certain, as yet unexamined, rejection of 'CO2 science' - maintaining it's a hoax with political underpinnings.

Jim's speciality is learning about wildlife studies with an eye towards errors in those studies.  Where it gets ugly is that though he's learned about these errors and failings from wildlife scientists who were directly involved.  Scientists who were aware of issues and problems and working hard to resolve them.  Scientists who willingly shared their experiences, challenges and learning curve.

Where Jim gets weird is the way he slams these same individuals by portraying them as clueless shills.  Where Jim gets bizarre is leaping from those shortcomings in wildlife studies to claiming it proves global warming is a hoax and that we should ignore it.  An astounding chain of logic.

As for flaws in wildlife studies, the important thing is, none of this stuff was secret, it was part of the scientific community's discussion and literature.  It's the stuff of science marching forward, learning from mistakes as much as from successes.  Another thing to keep in mind is that wildlife studies over huge expanses of landscape are exceedingly difficult and running a perfect experiment is near impossible.

What Jim ignores is that every serious scientist, wildlife and otherwise, spends as much of their time studying and assessing errors, unexpected surprises, and those '20/20 hindsight mistakes' in order to understand and learn from them.

Once I got into researching Jim's claims and contacting many of the scientists he singled out for derision I was shocked at how shabbily Jim treated the hospitality and collegial help and support he was given for his (Heartland Institute's? Anthony's?) research project.

I've made the effort to document Jim Steele's words and claims.  I specify his errors, and then I provide the information Jim shields from his audience.

Jim keeps running away from my challenge instead preferring the shelter and comfort of his Republican/libertarian echo-chamber, where he can lash out at me with unrestrained venom and irrationality.

Since he won't debate, I challenge any of his fans to challenge my assessment of Mr. Steele's game.  You think I misrepresent Steele or his claims?  Where?  Name calling is easy and cheap.  Defining what I misrepresent is the challenge.  Being able to civilly defend one's counter-claims should be easy, if you have honest facts on your side.

In February of 2019, circumstances have me once again sparring with my self-certain silly, but oh so nasty and deluded libertarian pal, Jim Steele, who's writing a new column, "What's Natural? in the Pacifica Tribune:

We The People of the United States have a moral, ethical right - along with a pragmatic need - to learn what scientists have learned about this planet's biosphere and climate engine without constant dishonest crossfire.

We should not tolerate serious scientists always being drown out by amoral, ruthless, and frankly ignorant arguments - that an astoundingly totalitarian GOP PR factory repeats over and over again, without ever learning a damned thing from the evidence in front of us.

What's Natural about Steele's Sea Level conundrum? Pacifica Tribune 3/20/2019

In his March 20th What’s Natural? column, Jim Steele winds up in a conundrum because he’s obsessing on Greenland while trying to figure out California’s sea level rise.  It got me to thinking about those six blind men grappling to make sense of an elephant while focusing on individual parts.

Letter to Editor Frederick, Regarding Steele's Scary Campfire Stories. March 6, 2019

Dear Pacifica Tribune Editor Fredrick,
… Lets start with a summary of the column’s ten paragraphs: introduces topic with the Heaven’s Gate Suicide Cult (no crass politicization happening here); dismisses the seriousness of a 1°Centigrade rise within our global climate engine; misrepresents the facts in order to disparage a respected butterfly expert; quibbles about Polar Bear counts, while ignoring that the Arctic Ice Cap is melting away; ridicules penguin researchers for revolutionizing census gathering abilities and keeping up to date with their available data; heaps scorn on the entire climate science community because some scientist at some low point once said snow was going to disappear from England in the next decades; oh and we're to forget about “atmospheric insulation” because CO2 is plant food; he tells us there’s far more important problems to address than our planet’s atmospheric insulation regulator going from 280 ppm when the steam engine was invented to over 410 ppm and rising fast today.
Then Steele’s coup de grâce: …

What's natural about Steele's scary stories? Why Pacifica Tribune? (3/6/2019)

My previous post gave a summary of March 6th’s What’s Natural? column in the ‘libertarian’ Pacifica Tribune.   So I’ll dive straight into this, the “too long, didn’t read” part 2 intended for the student of libertarian deception.  Here I dissect the words and offer links to serious sources for the other side of Steele assertions.

Considering Sagan's actual Baloney Detection Kit

. . . Here I simply want to allow Carl Sagan's own words to speak for him, though with an introduction from Maria Popova:

Through their training, scientists are equipped with what Sagan calls a “baloney detection kit” — a set of cognitive tools and techniques that fortify the mind against penetration by falsehoods:
The kit is brought out as a matter of course whenever new ideas are offered for consideration. If the new idea survives examination by the tools in our kit, we grant it warm, although tentative, acceptance. …

What’s natural about Steele’s baloney kit #1 - via Pacifica Tribune 2/20

Jim Steele writes: "Politicians from all sides manufacture "crises" and "demons" to promote their agendas superficially designed to fight those crises."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, no arguing that.  So far so good.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steele: "In his book The Demon Haunted World," Carl Sagan famously published his Scientific Baloney Detection Kit, a "do and don’t" list to guide honest scientific inquiry."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wait a minute.  How did we get from “Politicians” to “Scientific Inquiry” via a book written for laypeople?
In the book Sagan “aims to explain the scientific method to laypeople, and to encourage people to learn critical and skeptical thinking.” (WIKI)
Serious scientific inquiry is something that only the learned can do.  Of course, one can be self-taught.  But expert status in any field demands, learning, acquiring real knowledge, skills and experience.
That is quite different from being a spectator trying to understand what the scientists and experts are talking about. …
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steele: ”Sadly, climate science has been too politicized. But Sagan's advice can help separate the politics from honest science regards claims of a "climate crisis.”"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here again Steele strives to coalesce science with politics and public spin - that is deceptive nonsense. …
Jim Steele's 'What's Natural?' via Pacifica Tribune - an overview
In a sober world, learning is a constructive process, it requires a willingness to look at all the evidence that’s available.
A couple months ago I had a friend from near Pacifica, California inform me that Jim Steele had attained a new soapbox, a regular column titled ‘What’s Natural?’ in the Pacifica Tribune.  (For what it’s worth, I've noticed the contrarian blog “WattsUpWithThat” hosted by the infamous Anthony Watts is mirroring Steele’s column.)
The column was bugging my pal since he could recognize Steele was playing fast and loose with the facts but didn’t have the scientific background, nor familiarity with Jim Steele’s game, which tends to overwhelm the uninitiated, to do the column justice.
He knew I was no scientist, but that I was a dedicated life long self-taught student of Earth and climate sciences, and that considering I graduated high school in ’73, I’ve seen a thing or two.
He kept challenging me to explain the rest of the story. …
Jim Steele watt's up with your venomous self-indignation?
Dear Jim Steele,
With time to reflect, I'm confused by your display of moral outrage in that January 7th WUWT broadside? Come on, lighten up, you should recognized the Shakespearian overtones and appreciate we were made for each other.
Besides, it was you who jumped into my lil climate change sparing camp over at SkepticForum back last spring.... you were the big shot daring anyone to dispute your nonsense.  Did you really think I was going to allow your Republican/libertarian "hey no worries, it's all a hoax" challenge to go unanswered?  Then in your IEEE 'climate science horror' series and LandscapesAndCycle you're the one that told folks to check original sources.  Well, I have and I've received responses including many full texts of published studies from:
Dr. Ainley,
Dr. Breckner,
Dr. Fretwell,
Dr. Guillaume,
Dr. Jenouvrier,
Dr. Kaiser,
Dr. Kato,
Dr. La Rue,
Dr. Tate,
with a couple still in the pipeline.  {And that's just for my most recent project reviewing your 7/1/14 "Blinded by Beliefs, Penguin Poop" article.  Due to be posted any day now.}
A brief read indicates this site is another of the group-think anthropogenic true believers who are incredibly organized to dispute, disparage, and 'take down' any sane and objective contrary argument against that line of propaganda.
citizenschallenge said...
Interesting example of an angry person - insults but no substance.
Mineguy, let me say this about that!
“Group think.” -
What’s that even mean in this context?
You could just as easily complain that, me thinking man landed on the moon is the result of group think. True enough, but that doesn’t make the fact any less true.
“Anthropogenic true believers” -
Again, an inane insult that doesn’t even make sense, anthropogenic what?
You bet I’m a true believer in the human capacity to radically and fundamentally change this Earth.
“incredibly organized” -
Don’t I wish it!
If you want organized you need to look to the Conservative Think Tanks, they got science by rhetoric and slander down to a science. As for broadcasting their fraud against science and the people's right to know, jezz that is some amazing organization at work, and you know it. *
“Any sane and objective argument against that line of propaganda” -
Then why aren’t you presenting any?
This childish snottiness is just that, childish snottiness. Why not try explaining what you find so laughable? Bet you can’t ! But, seriously this whole climate science dialogue is supposed to be about constructively learning, not about malicious calling names and invoking crazy conspiracy theories.
“That line of propaganda” -
Do you know what propaganda is?
This is an index of detailed studies into the words of Jim Steele.
It’s all about including specifics and references.
If you think I’m full of it, that’s very easy to demonstrate. Bet you can’t !
Quote me and show us where I’m mistaken.
That’s how civil constructive dialogue is supposed to work.
Who knows, you may catch me in a mistake and we can turn that into a learning experience also.
Please “Mineguy at 3:44” insulting me is easy. Rationally explaining what I’ve gotten wrong, that’s much more challenging.
Are you up for it ? ? ?
